Dr. Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India who served the nation from 2004 to 2014, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. The veteran statesman and economist was admitted to the emergency ward of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, where he was declared dead at 9:51 PM.

A Sudden Loss

Dr. Singh, widely respected for his calm demeanor and transformative policies, experienced a sudden loss of consciousness at his residence on December 26, 2024. Immediate resuscitative measures were initiated, and he was rushed to AIIMS at 8:06 PM. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, the former Prime Minister could not be revived.

"With profound grief, we inform the demise of the former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92. Despite all efforts, he was declared dead at 9:51 PM," AIIMS stated in an official release.

Dr. Singh leaves behind a legacy of economic transformation and political service. Known as the architect of India’s landmark 1991 economic reforms, Singh played a pivotal role in pulling the country back from the brink of bankruptcy. As the Finance Minister under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, his visionary policies ushered in an era of liberalization, reshaping India’s economic trajectory.

During his decade-long tenure as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, Dr. Singh led the country through significant economic growth, social welfare programs, and infrastructure development. His quiet yet firm leadership style earned admiration and respect across party lines.

Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda expressed his grief on the microblogging platform X, stating, "The passing of Former Prime Minister and Economist Shri Manmohan Singh ji is an immense loss for the nation. Dr. Singh, who retired from the Rajya Sabha in April 2024 after a 33-year tenure, is survived by his wife, Gurcharan Singh, and their three daughters.
